A floor mat should help your routine without creating a safety or maintenance problem. These eight mistakes are worth checking before and after fitting.

1–2: Choosing by appearance and ignoring clearance

1. Buying a mat because it looks right overlooks the actual floor shape. Check make, model and model year rather than assuming similar vehicles share a layout.

2. Ignoring pedal clearance is unsafe. Confirm unobstructed movement of all pedals and check secure positioning before driving.

3–4: Stacking mats and ignoring movement

3. Placing one mat on top of another can affect height and positioning. Do not stack them unless the relevant vehicle and product instructions explicitly permit it.

4. Continuing to use a shifting mat risks interference with controls. Stop safely, correct the fit according to instructions and seek advice if it cannot be secured.

5–6: Using unknown cleaners and refitting damp

5. A household cleaner is not automatically suitable for a mat material. Use the recommended product and method; avoid residue near pedals or other controls.

6. Refitting a wet mat can trap dampness. Confirm whether removal and wet cleaning are suitable, then dry fully before refitting.

7–8: Hiding dirt and assuming benefit names are ratings

7. Ignoring the edges and floor beneath a cover allows residue or moisture to go unnoticed. Inspect those areas as allowed by the fitting instructions.

8. Treating a demonstration or benefit name as a certified rating can lead to unrealistic expectations. Ask for the actual mat’s specifications, care information and commercial terms.
